Health Champions
Want to become a Volunteer Health Champion?
Our community Volunteer Health Champions Project aims to recruit and train local people to support deliver the local Health Trainers Service in order to encourage and empower residents to lead healthier lifestyles.
They are committed to working closely with other service providers to deliver a universal service to the residents of Tower Hamlets.
The key role of a Volunteer Health Champion:
- Obtain referrals for the Health Trainers programme
- Healthy Living: for example to encouraging people to stop smoking, increase their physical activity, eat healthily and drink sensibly
- Raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of common conditions, such as diabetes and common cancers
- Attend various community events and festivals
- They also signpost clients to wider services such as Welfare & Housing Advice, Stop Smoking Services, Primary Care, Mental Health and Leisure Centres.
In order to meet the above, the ideal candidate should:
- Commit to minimum of 3.5 hours a week
- Be self-motivated and creative
- Demonstrate a passion for health awareness and healthy living
- Be flexible with availability
- Have excellent communication skills
- Attend various training opportunities
Once recruited onto the programme, Volunteer Health Champions will receive ongoing training, support and regular supervision to enable them to carry out their role. They undertake their activities in a range of community settings, such as community centres, GP surgeries, Idea Stores, shopping centres and at local events.
Volunteer Health Champions make a real difference in the community. It is also an exciting opportunity to get to know the local community, to meet new people and to gain new skills, nationally recognised qualifications and work experience.
